Opis:


Gwynplaine, son of Lord Clancharlie, has a permanent smile carved on his face by the King, in revenge for Gwynplaine's father's treachery. Gwynplaine is adopted by a travelling showman and becomes a popular idol. He falls in love with the blind Dea. The king dies, and his evil jester tries to destroy or corrupt Gwynplaine.

    Američki nijemi film iz 1928.god. rađen po istoimenom romanu Viktora Igoa iz 1869. godine.
    Nakon što Lord Klenčarli uvrijedi kralja Džejmsa II, ovaj naređuje hirurgu da ureže lordovom sinu Gvinplejnu vještački osmijeh na lice kako bi mogao 'zauvijek da se smije budali od svog oca'. Lord biva zatvoren u 'Čeličnu Damu', a Gvinplejn, zajedno sa slijepom djevojčicom Deom koju pronalazi u oluji u naručju smrznute majke, nalazi utočište kod Ursusa, lakrdijaša koji živi od izvođenja predstava. Gvinplejn postaje atrakcija poznata u kraju kao 'Čovjek koji se smije'. Zaljubljen je u Deu, ali ne želi da je oženi jer osjeća da nije dovoljno dobar za nju koja nikad neće moći da vidi njegovo užasno lice.
